about

This song was inspired by my facebook feed on the evening of Nov. 8th, 2016, as I watched friends go on suicide watch and other friends reaching out with suicide hotline numbers. I was going to wait until I completely finished this before uploading, but then the death toll started coming in. No one I knew personally, but friends of friends, and it broke my heart. This is for you. All of you. Raw, and incomplete. Just like life.

lyrics

(Still deciding on the title, I've got three)
Why Am I Alive? / Help Me Believe / Distract Me, Please
©11/9/2016 Shanti Singleton

I need someone to distract me
From the thoughts inside my head
From the razor blade against my wrist
From wishing I were dead
I need someone to distract me
Please...

I can not win this alone
Please walk with me another mile
Give me something to believe in
A reason I should smile

Help me believe
That I've got someone on my side
Because right now, I cannot see
Why I'm alive
I'm still alive

I need something to distract me
From the world burning down
From the hate that's heaped upon my life
And I'm afraid to look around
I need someone to distract me
Please...

How much longer do I have
Before they tell me I've no rights
Before they take away my vote
Before they come for me by night

Help me believe
That I've got someone on my side
Because right now, I cannot see
Why I'm alive

Help me believe that I'm still safe
That I've got someone on my side
Because right now, I cannot see
Why I'm alive
I'm still alive

I need something to distract me
From the fears inside my head
From the razor blade against my wrist
From wishing I were dead
I need someone to distract me
Please...
